The Ruhr region in the north of Germany, once synonymous
with heavy industry and big pollution, has been miraculously transformed
into area of cultureand recreation. In 2010 the whole area,
along with Essen, was deignatedas a European City of Culture.
Cocos Island sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, some 500km off the shore of Costa Rica. Its unique position and climate as it is almost permanently under cloud cover and has exceptionally high annual rainfall which has resulted in an abundance of flora and fauna as well as dramatic waterfalls, some of which drop spectacularly into the sea. But it is beneath the waves that the real treasures of Cocos are revealed. The rich coral reef that surrounds the island is home to more than 30 species of coral, 60 species of crustaceans, 600 species of molluscs and over 300 species of fish. This has led to the area becoming a mecca for scuba divers, rated one of the top 10 scuba diving locations in the world by PADI.
